We are looking for a Commerce Technical Director, who can offer additional expertise and motivation to our well-established Commerce team.
Based in the heart of Manchester, CTI is now one of the largest digital transformation agencies outside of London with 220 Digital professionals working for us. Our journey is unique and we need dedicated and talented people to join us to help our continued growth and development. Not only will you have exposure to some exciting technologies but you’ll also get to know our various teams and departments.
Why our Commerce team?
You’ll be joining a team of 20 commerce developers - including a peer group of lead developers as well as a mix of senior, mid and junior developers. You’ll have a dedicated Test Lead per project, as well as support from team members across the wider business such as project managers, account managers, our production team and our commercial/sales team.
CTI Digital is the preferred digital partner for an impressive array of retailers including Little Greene Paint, Kew Gardens, McGraw-Hill Education and Visit Britain. Our Commerce team works primarily with Adobe/Magento, however, we are increasingly working with several other platforms including, but not limited to:

What will my day look like?
The department's Technical Director has ultimate responsibility for the success of the department, with the support of the CTO and in line with the overall company strategy/direction.
Business & Strategy
Take responsibility for departmental budget and success against agreed financial targets
Input into the strategic direction of the department/profit centre, introducing new approaches and technologies based on client demand and changes in the market to expand our service offering and improve efficiency
Raise the profile of CTI Digital by arranging participation in relevant events
Commercial
Work as part of a commercial squad alongside members of the client services, sales and operations teams to ensure and coordinate a healthy, deliverable pipeline of work for the team
Help qualify commercial opportunities based on delivery risks and team skill set
Author and input into commercial pitches, tenders and proposals based on client briefs, including attending pitches in person or online
Contribute to and maintain standard sales and marketing collateral
Work with clients directly to discuss requirements and proposed solutions at the pre-sales stage
Oversee or personally author and review/approve solution estimates to ensure an efficient approach is taken which meets client requirements and is in line with departmental delivery standards
Oversee or personally author and review/approve commercial delivery contracts, ensuring an adequate level of detail to enable successful delivery, based on an overall understanding of our services
Coordinate with account managers/directors to input into client roadmaps in a timely and effective manner, ensuring security/maintenance requirements are covered while offering solutions that help deliver on their business goals
Maintain relationships with relevant partners and suppliers to coordinate sales leads, team training and development and the provision of supporting services via third parties
Delivery/operations
Understand and ensure deliveries align with company-wide processes and standards
Contribute to the continual improvement of company-wide standards in collaboration with the CTO and other technical teams
Take ultimate responsibility for successful planning and delivery of work undertaken by the team, from both quality and budget/timeline perspectives, by ensuring the team has relevant skills/experience levels and acting as an escalation point when necessary
Define and maintain efficient, effective team-specific processes where relevant and ensure they are understood and successfully delivered by the team
Ensure team-specific processes are documented in a central location and contribute to the documentation of relevant wider company processes
Input into resourcing decisions for the benefit of project/service delivery and overall team utilisation, factoring in the pipeline of upcoming work
Continually review and introduce operational improvements, incorporating learnings from delivery retrospectives
Oversee the development and maintenance of base builds and other tooling used by the team, with justified return on investment
Oversee the identification and development of appropriate reusable solutions, components and products for the benefit of the client base, with justified return on investment
Liaise with the Support Services Director to optimise technical approaches and ensure the support service is appropriately resourced to provide an efficient, high-quality service
People
Take responsibility for team quality and staff satisfaction via effective appraisal, skill tracking, training and performance improvement/disciplinary processes
Identify recruitment requirements suitably in advance and work with the People & Culture team to interview and onboard relevant candidates
Input into the team-specific interview and onboarding processes to ensure high-quality candidates are identified and new team members can start efficiently
Ensure the department structure and individuals within the team are adequately skilled and informed to ensure service delivery is self-sufficient, minimising escalations
Take responsibility for effective team utilisation, reviewing utilisation reports and identifying areas where individuals or services could work differently to improve overall utilisation
Key Skills & Experience Required
Knowledge and experience in the digital commerce industry and related areas
A firm understanding of website/web application development, delivery and support process
At least some knowledge/experience of our key platforms - Magento, Shopify and BigCommerce
A good background understanding of the wider commerce ecosystem - marketing, CRO, supporting technologies (PIMs, ERP systems), etc.
Experience with solution definition/estimation, commercial proposals/tender responses and pitches
Excellent face-to-face and written communication skills
Experience in running a scalable team with well-distributed responsibilities.
Location: Our head office is in Manchester city centre (Ancoats) - we adopt a hybrid working model (2 days in the office per week)
Salary: Dependent on Experience
